In the College Football Playoff era, more emphasis is put on national championships than ever before.
Still, there are teams all across the country that have excellent seasons. Major bowl games and championships are what people tend to remember, but for just about every program, 10 wins is quite an accomplishment.
Believe it or not however, there are three teams from major conferences who have never accomplished that feat. Here’s a look at the short list of Power 5 schools to never win 10 games in a season:
School Wins Record: Nine. (1945 and 1967)
Best Final AP Ranking: No. 4 in 1945 and 1967
Overview: Had the Big Ten been able to play a full season last year, Indiana may have achieved the 10-win feat. The Hoosiers have a pair of top-5 finishes in their history, but have been a doormat for the better parts of the last quarter-century. Things however, seem to be turning around under head coach Tom Allen. Indiana just had back-to-back winning seasons for the first time since 1993 and 1994.
School Wins Record: Nine. (1906, 2000 and 2020)
Best Final AP Ranking: No. 9 in 2020
Overview: As is the case with Indiana, Iowa State would have likely had a 10-win campaign with a full season in 2020. The Cyclones are coming off a banner year that culminated in their first New Year’s Six bowl win and AP top-10 finish ever. Iowa State also reached the Big 12 Championship for the first time. Fans in Ames probably won’t have to wait much longer for that first 10-win season. Matt Campbell has coached Iowa State to three straight winning seasons. That had not happened for the Cyclones since the late-1970’s.
School Wins Record: Nine (1904, 1915, 2012 and 2013)
Best Final AP Ranking: No. 12 in 1948
Overview: Vanderbilt has finished ranked just three times ever and two of those instances came under James Franklin in consecutive years. Since going 9-4 in 2012 and 2013, the Commodores have suffered through seven straight losing seasons. Vanderbilt doesn’t have a history of success by any means, but it is coming off its first winless season ever. Vanderbilt has finished with a winning record in SEC play just once since 1983.
